ECC specialises in the physical settlement of grid-bound energy (power, natural gas) and energy-related products (CO2 emission rights).
ECC is responsible for physical delivery of traded or OTC-registered contracts. For this reason, ECC has concluded contracts with 16 European transmission system operators (TSOs) for both power and natural gas.
Through the nomination, TSOs are provided with the schedule which represents the traded volumes for each trading participant in each market area. Nomination includes the scheduling of the local markets of ECC’s partner exchanges and the nomination of cross-border power transmissions as part of CWE Market Coupling. In this context, ECC assumes the role of the central counterparty, thus, taking a first step towards a pan-European electricity market.
Furthermore, ECC is linked to the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt) as well as to the Dutch emissions trading registry NEa (Nederlandse Emissie Autoriteit) to perform the delivery of EU Emission Allowances (EUA) and Certified Emission Rights (CER). As a result, ECC assumes a central role in the reduction of carbon emissions in Germany and the Netherlands.
